Pause, Relax and Exchange

Podere Buriano is a former farmhouse from the late 18th century in Monterotondo Marittimo in Tuscany. A house in which to relax, exchange ideas and concentrate on work. A place with soul, a place of tranquillity.

Podere Buriano is more than just a holiday home – it is a retreat. It is a place where you can put yourself, your fellow human beings and nature centre stage.

Here you can spend hours in silence and indulge – cooking, eating, drinking, laughing, playing, discussing, reading, philosophising or going for a walk together and sleeping in late.

Memories of summer nights with the locals, of endless parties, of art and conversations, of silence and the sounds of pheasants, frogs and crickets come flooding back.

With artistic flair and attention to detail, Barbara Fässler has breathed new life into this place and combined the new with the old.

Welcome to Podere Buriano.

History, Friendship and Art

Podere Buriano was taken over by four Swiss nationals in 1974: Theres and Hans Fässler-Weber from Zurich and Ursula and Roger Roth-Lusser from Altdorf. For years, they spent their summers there with their children and many friends, organising cookery evenings and parties with half the village. Monterotondo Marittimo is a special village of 1,000 people with an open mind and a keen interest in discussions about “God and the world”, where events and village festivals are organised on a regular basis.

The house went to Theres (Teresa) Fässler in the 1990s. Well integrated and networked, she lived there for over 30 years. We remember the regular invitations, the rummy rounds with a dip in the swimming pool, the legendary olive harvests and eating and drinking together.

In summer 2025, after almost five years of project and renovation work, the gem has been modernised: with an aesthetic and homely mix of old and new, antique and contemporary design, with artistic sensitivity and a structured room and colour concept based on ecological principles.

Surroundings, Nature and Culture

The Podere is surrounded by 7 hectares of land with 200 olive trees. In autumn we produce our own olive oil. Below the property there is a hill with high-quality clay, which was once used to make bricks.

The village of Monterotondo Marittimo is located in a geothermal area. Above the village, you can visit the “Parco delle Biancane”, where sulphur vapours rise directly from the ground and the colours of the earth display an overwhelming palette of shades: from deep red to sulphur yellow to green and pink. In the adjoining Mubia Museum, scientific and technical details about geothermal energy are clearly explained, such as how electricity is generated using the pressure of the sulphur vapours that are extracted from the earth.

The house is a five-minute drive from the village with shops, two restaurants and an enoteca.

The sea with its beaches in Torremozza or in the Golfo di Baratti can be reached in three quarters of an hour by car. It is the same distance to Piombino, from where you can cross over to the island of Elba.

Etruscan archaeological sites and museums await in the surrounding area. The medieval town of Massa Marittima in the middle of the “Colline metallifere” is half an hour away and well worth a visit with its cathedral and the Museo della Miniera. The weekly market is held here on Wednesdays.

If you drive a little further in the direction of Follonica, you will reach the beautiful Lago dell’Accesa.

The famous excursion destinations of Siena, San Gargano, Volterra and San Gimignano are around an hour’s drive away. Niki de Saint Phalle’s Tarot Garden in Capalbio and Daniel Spoerri’s sculpture garden in Seggiano are an hour and 40 minutes away, while Florence is around two hours away.

There are numerous hiking trails in the extensive municipality of Monterotondo Marittimo. A new map is available in the house.

For cyclists, the gentle hills offer an ideal challenge while enjoying the marvellous landscape.

Holidays, Retreats and Inspiration

Podere Buriano can be used in a variety of ways since its renovation in 2025. The target audience is just as diverse.

The house and its car-free surroundings surrounded by nature are ideal for (large) families with children, teenagers and pets.

Anyone who needs a creative break is just as welcome as someone who wants to write, make art or work in peace. As the Podere has Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections in all areas – and there is a table and chair in every room – it is perfect for smartworking and digital nomads.

Group holidays and retreats for associations, educational institutions, companies or collectives are also conceivable.

The new studio extension with separate bathroom is particularly suitable for workshops (painting, ceramics, watercolour, etc.), coaching sessions and yoga.

If more people would like to take part in a workshop or retreat than there are rooms available in the house, accommodation can be rented in the surrounding area, e.g. in Le rondini or in the Tremolini. If required, a cooking service for dinner and breakfast can be organised for groups.
